Trek for Trash – Fall Cleanup
Trek for Trash in its 10th year is New Mexico’s unique statewide
fall cleanup that started under Governor Gary Johnson in 1995, when New
Mexico Clean & Beautiful partnered with the NM State Parks and coordinated
a route starting in the northwest corner of the state – Farmington
and ending in the southeastern part of the state – Roswell.
What is unique about this event? Trek for Trash is a litter cleanup with
a core group of bicyclists, staff and volunteers who travel the highways of
the state picking up trash. Bicyclists travel over 500 miles during
the event picking up litter from highways and communities in an effort to
promote litter awareness not only in the communities they travel through but to
citizens statewide.
New Mexico Clean & Beautiful continues to organize and
coordinate local efforts for this successful and popular fall cleanup.Every year the route changes to
personally impact different areas of the state, however every community is encouraged
to organize local litter cleanups on the designated "Trek for Trash" day, which is
usually a Saturday during the event. To participate in the Trek for Trash
