Beep, Beep - Here Comes Dusty
[10/19/2007]
New Mexico Clean & Beautiful (a program of the New Mexico Tourism Department) has joined with Keep New Mexico Beautiful, Inc. and the New Mexico Department of Transportation in creating several hands-on, family-fun-type projects targeting New Mexico youngsters.
Dusty Roadrunner, the official litter control mascot, has been asked to help send the message.
“New Mexico Clean & Beautiful initiated several projects as part of an education program that was funded by the New Mexico Department of Transportation,” said Joseph Lobato, executive director of New Mexico Clean & Beautiful. “One of the projects involved updating the “Fun with Dusty Roadrunner Activity Book” for third graders and “Dusty Roadrunner Visits the National Monuments” booklet for fifth graders. Both are owned by Keep New Mexico Beautiful, Inc.”
When did New Mexico join the Union? What national monuments are in the state? What are the state grass, flower and vegetable? Quizzes, mazes, math and recycling fun facts are just some of the contents contained in the activity book. Sherry Gwyn, executive director for Keep New Mexico Beautiful, Inc., illustrated and updated the text for each booklet.
Dusty also takes on an interactive role on the New Mexico Clean & Beautiful web site link http://www.nmcleanandbeautiful.org/DUSTY/index.php.
“These clever new booklets are a great way to get children involved in beautification at a young age,” said Michael Cerletti, Secretary of the New Mexico Tourism Department. “We commend New Mexico Clean & Beautiful, and we thank our friends at Keep New Mexico Beautiful and the New Mexico Department of Transportation for their hard work, and all New Mexico communities for keeping the Land of Enchantment a showcase for themselves and their visitors.”
Distribution of the activity books have begun through the Keep America Beautiful affiliate programs around the state. The nine New Mexico Visitor Information Centers around the state have also received the National Monument booklets for distribution. Thirty thousand (30,000) copies of each booklet have been printed.
If you are interested in receiving copies call Keep New Mexico Beautiful, Inc. (505-883-5559) or New Mexico Clean & Beautiful, 1-800-Toss-No-Mas (1-800-867-7666). Each booklet is also downloadable from www.tossnomas.com, www.knmb.org
Lobato said New Mexico Clean & Beautiful recently led educational training in after-school programs for eight Keep America Beautiful affiliate programs, utilizing activities from Keep America Beautiful’s “Waste in Place Curriculum,” a K-6 based curriculum. Nearly 100 instructors were trained and more than 300 students participated in the programs.
“In addition to the new Dusty Roadrunner interactive component on the New Mexico Clean & Beautiful website, another new feature has been added called ‘Community Statistics’ under the programs menu,” Lobato said. “These statistics detail the results of individual community programs, such as the number of cleanups, areas beautified, trees planted, areas landscaped, presentations to adults and children, etc. The grant award for each community through the New Mexico Clean & Beautiful grant application process is also given.”

Partners for a Clean New Mexico formed earlier this year to leverage staff time, technical expertise, legal authority, and funding to address the problem of illegal dumping in New Mexico. Its goal is to increase the effectiveness of addressing illegal dumping issues, encourage changes in public attitudes and behavior, and produce measurable results on our shared landscape.
